Max Planck Florida Institute

Mission: To integrate biology and technology to provide fundamental advance in our understanding of the origins, development, and function of the nervous system and other complex tissues.

The Max Planck Florida Institute (MPFI) seeks to provide new insight into important biological questions using innovative experimental and theoretical methodologies.  With a focus on the organization and function of cellular assemblies in the brain and other complex tissues, research at the MPFI aims to provide a quantitative understanding of biological systems employing expertise and technologies from neuroscience, cell biology, genetics, the physical sciences, and engineering.  By embracing a wide vision of biology from nanotechnology to cellular structure to novel model organisms, research at the MPFI aims to unlock bottleneck questions in our understanding of the biological world and the advancement of human health.

Part of the prestigious Max Planck Society based in Germany, the MPFI is the first and only institute of its kind in North America.  Situated in the new biosciences cluster in scenic Palm Beach County in south Florida, the MPFI seeks to provide a vibrant, interactive environment where scientists are provided generous ongoing support to conduct high impact research at the cutting edge.

Areas of interest include

  • Neural systems and circuits
  • Neural development and plasticity
  • Neural evolution and behavior
